Tip #288 - How To Enter Non-Party Contact Information

Occasionally, it may be necessary to use a non-party as the Primary Contact in a case. This may happen if the plaintiff is a minor or incompetent person for example, or it may even be necessary to do so for a defendant in a certain situation, such as when your firm represents the defendant in a criminal defense case.

If your firm represents the plaintiff, and you know the non-party contact information at intake, you can enter that information when the case is initially created in Intake Wizard! The non-party contact should be entered in the same general section where the plaintiff’s information is entered. Simply click the tab for “Non-Party Contact” and enter the information there.

For cases that are already existing in SmartAdvocate, you can enter the non-party contact information by navigating to the Plaintiff’s or Defendant’s tab from the left menu as appropriate.

Here’s How:

  1. Click the Plaintiff tab on the left menu

  2. Click the Summary tab under the Plaintiff section

  3. Click the “ADD NON-PARTY CONTACT” button

  1. Enter appropriate information for the non-party contact. Note: Most likely you will need to create/add the new contact, as that person may not yet exist in the system

  2. If the non-party contact will be the Primary Contact, you should check the box for “Primary Contact”

If this new contact was flagged as the Primary Contact, you will see that information on the main Summary Screen in the Plaintiff’s panel.

A defendant non-party contact is entered the same way as you would enter the plaintiff non-party contact as described above. Simply click on the Defendant’s Tab on the left menu then click the Summary tab under the Defendant’s section.
