Tip #191 - Generate A Word Document As PDF Using Document Template

In general, Document Templates will generate your finished documents in Word. Now you can use the “Generate Document As” option to generate the finished document in a PDF format. This option is useful in those situations where the finished document, such as a simple Welcome Letter, will not be edited after it is generated.
The templates themselves are created in the usual way using merge codes, etc. The “Generate Document As” options are set in SmartAdvocate in Admin > Document Templates. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Admin > Document Templates

2. Select the Template you want to work with and click the Edit button

3. On the “Edit Form” screen, choose the “Generate Document As” option from among:

a. Word by Default

b. PDF by Default

c. PDF Forced

 

a. If Word by Default is selected, “Generate Document as PDF” will be unchecked by default for this template.

b. If PDF by Default is selected, “Generate Document as PDF” will be checked by default for this template.

c. If PDF Forced is selected, “Generate Document as PDF” will be checked and change to the generate options will be disabled. The user will not be able to change the generate options for this template. The user will be forced to generate this template as a PDF only.
