Tip #229 - How to Use UDFs in Case Browse Searches

UDFs are Incident Type (Case Group) or Case Type specific. When creating UDFs you need to do so by selecting the Incident Type (Case Group) or Case Type to which the UDF will apply. Most UDFs are commonly designated by Case Type (Case Group/Incident Type UDFs are less often used). Case Browse will allow you to filter for cases using Case Type UDF’s only (In the current version of SmartAdvocate, you cannot filter in Case Browse using Incident/Case Group UDF’s).

Here's How:

  1. Access Case Browse from the top tool bar

  2. Select the desired Case Type (you can only select one). In this example we will select the Camp Lejeune Case Type.

3. After selecting the specific Case Type, click the UDF tab

4. Select a radio button for either Incident, Case, Plaintiff, Defendant, Court, Expert or PFS to designate which UDF page you want to search. In our example we will select Incident.

5. The list of available UDF’s will then display. Depending on the type of UDF in question, you will be able to select an item (typically check boxes), enter search terms (text) in a field or select the “Unanswered” option. This will return results where there was no entry for the item. In our first example, we will select “Military” (i.e., if military was selected in response to the question ‘Is Claimant Civilian or Military?’).

6. Chose any other appropriate filters as desired. Then, click the Search Cases button in the top right corner of the Case Browse screen to display your results.

Here’s another example: We will use the same Case Type Camp Lejeune Case as above and select the Incident Page UDF. But this time, we will choose the “Unanswered” option.

Our Case Browse results will be cases where the question: “Is Claimant Civilian or Military?” was unanswered.
